Healthy Cities Day

From ecology 20.5.2023.

The Croatian Healthy Cities Network marks the national Healthy Cities Day on 20 May, with numerous occasional activities whereby cities and counties, Network members, present their health promotion programs.

The "Healthy City" project was launched in 1986 as a development project of the European Office of the World Health Organization. The project reaffirms the holistic nature of health, and emphasizes the interdependence of physical, mental and social dimensions of health. Being based on the assumption that health can be achieved through the joint efforts of individuals and groups living in the city, it strives to encourage more active participation of city dwellers in all activities in the city that may have an effect on health.

It is also an opportunity for numerous NGOs and volunteers to present their activities and programs. Healthy cities ensure higher quality of life and support to all their inhabitants, continuously creating the conditions for the city to become a healthier and better place to live in for all its inhabitants. The Healthy City project of the World Health Organization (WHO) has been implemented and developed only by the most developed cities in Europe and the world, which consider people the greatest strength of the community on their road to development. Healthy cities ensure better health conditions and health protection standards in the community in the broadest sense. For this reason, people who live in a healthy city have better conditions for health and life in general. Once launched in a community, the Healthy City project becomes a process that lasts, and never ceases in the developed communities worldwide, as it makes all the key people in the community (experts and politicians) take responsibility for health, while making citizens allies in healthcare. This project permanently changes the city in an effort to make it a better, healthier and happier place to live in.
