Zagreb is the capital of the Republic of Croatia and the largest city in Croatia in terms of population. The wider area of the city gathers more than a million inhabitants.

Historically, the city of Zagreb grew out of two settlements on the neighboring hills, Gradec and Kaptol, which form the core of today's city, its historic center.

It is located on the southwestern edge of the Pannonian Plain at an average altitude of 122 m, at the foot of the southern slopes of Medvednica, on the left and right banks of the Sava River.

The position of the city, which is at the junction of the Alpine, Dinaric, Adriatic and Pannonian regions, has enabled Zagreb to become a bridge between Central Europe and the Adriatic area. According to data from 2018, there are 802,338 inhabitants in Zagreb. As the largest and capital city, Zagreb is the cultural, scientific, economic and administrative center of the Republic of Croatia and the Zagreb County.

Thanks to the role of the largest transport center in Croatia, a developed industry with a long tradition and scientific and research institutions, Zagreb is the most economically developed city in Croatia.

As the capital of Croatia, the City of Zagreb is a special territorial, administrative and self-governing unit that has the status of a city.

The Day of the City of Zagreb is celebrated on May 31, together with the feast of the Mother of God of the Stone Gate, the patron saint of the City of Zagreb.
