In Croatia, covid-19 was not confirmed in wild animals during the second wave of the epidemic, but the circulation of the virus was found in wastewater in seven cities, according to a study by the Croatian Veterinary Institute (HVI). The circulation of the new virus in wastewater was determined during the second wave of the epidemic in Zagreb, Vinkovci, Slavonski Brod, Koprivnica, Karlovac, Zadar and Split. It was shown, however, that all effluent samples after tertiary treatment were negative, meaning that the second and third stages of wastewater treatment contribute to virus removal. The head of the Laboratory for Serological Diagnosis of HVI Viral Diseases, Dragan Brnić, noted that there is currently no solid evidence that wastewater and shellfish can be a source of infection for humans, and therefore the public health risk is considered low.
