International Plastic Bag Free Day

From Croatia 3.7.2023.

We use plastic bags for less than 25 minutes

There is a long list of plastic products that are the biggest source of pollution today - our seas, soil and drinking water - endangering the lives of numerous marine animals and human health. The International Day Without Plastic Bags is dedicated to educating and raising citizens' awareness of the harmfulness of single-use plastic products, especially the environmental problems caused by this most popular and widely used product. The bags that we buy in stores are usually used for less than 25 minutes and then end up in the trash. They may disappear from our homes as waste, but unfortunately not from our planet!

It's a frightening fact that just one plastic bag decomposes in 20 to 1000 years considering that recycling hasn't fully started and large amounts of bags are improperly discarded in the environment. Nearly 270,000 tons of plastic waste is floating in the oceans today, killing fish, mammals, turtles and birds, and it is fairly certain that plastic bags also affect human health. International Plastic Bag Free Day, celebrated on July 3 with numerous activities around the world, is becoming a growing global movement. The celebration of the International Day Without Plastic Bags is organized with the aim of educating the public about the harmfulness of plastic bags and their replacements.

It is a tragic fact that there are 150,000,000 tons of plastic waste in the oceans today and 4,800,000 to 12,700,000 tons of plastic enter the seas every year. Plastic waste causes marine animal deaths, habitat degradation, while exposure to chemicals from plastic entering the body through the food chain also threatens human health.
